CONGRATS TO THE MYSTERIOUS GAZE OF THE FLAMINGO & LES VALSEURS - FESTIVAL DE CANNES 2025 UN CERTAIN REGARD 1ST PRIZE
Un Certain Regard Prize Goes to The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo
Diego Céspedes' debut feature, The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, has won the first prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Set in a small mining town in the Chilean desert in 1982, the film follows 12-year-old Lidia, the only girl in the community, as a strange and frightening illness begins to spread. Gay men are accused of transmitting it “through their eyes,” and Lidia sets out to uncover what’s happening. Through a mix of harsh reality and dreamlike imagery, Céspedes weaves a powerful coming-of-age story about truth, fear, and resilience.
The film is produced by Quijote Films (Chile) and Les Valseurs (France), one of French in Motion US & FR Program's proud alumni. This cross-border collaboration reflects the kind of creative partnerships that French in Motion is dedicated to supporting.
Céspedes, who previously won the Cinéfondation First Prize at Cannes in 2018 for his short The Summer of the Electric Lion, returns to the Croisette with a first feature that is both poetic and politically urgent.
The Un Certain Regard section, which showcases bold new voices in international cinema, featured 18 titles this year. Céspedes’ win confirms his place as one of the most exciting emerging filmmakers to watch.
